Manufacturing one-of-a-kind products

Hien Electric Industries, Ltd. began operations in 1954 as a lead-sheathed cable manufacturer. In those days, producing lead-sheathed cables required large machinery, and it was believed that only major manufacturers had the capacity to do so.

However, Hien founder Shuji Yamadori bravely challenged this prevailing belief. By employing imagination and ingenuity through extensive trial and error, he succeeded in inventing a highly innovative small device to sheath cables with lead. With this ground-breaking achievement, even small and medium-sized manufacturers were now able to produce cables of the same high quality as those made by major manufacturers.

The achievement was considered impossible at that time. It is no exaggeration, then, to say that Hien, since its establishment, has demonstrated originality and innovation. More than 50 years since its founding, the company continues to innovate with such originality that characterized it in the beginning.

Originally, Hien’s lead-sheathed electric cables were only designed for special underground equipment. However, they were later adopted for on-board use because of their exceptional quality. With the boom in Japan’s shipbuilding industry at about the same time, Hien grew into a high ranking globally recognized ship cable manufacturer.

However, Hien was never content with what it had accomplished; it continued to pursue new technologies and innovations. While expanding its share in the ship cable market, it developed two more cutting-edge products: SUPRO Strand, which protects buildings and civil engineering structures for future generations, and Super Hanger, which supports broadband infrastructure in the digital age. These new flagship products are brimming with the technologies and know-how that Hien has acquired from cable manufacturing. They are both excellent examples of the innovation and originality that could only have come from Hien’s passion.

Additionally, Hien is currently focusing on functional films. It will apply the experience and technologies that it has accumulated over the years into the development of functional films, a new field of business, which is highly promising.

For Hien, innovation goes beyond product development. It has also been carrying out environmental initiatives since its early days; it is another major part of its corporate culture. With a business foothold in the Osadano Industrial Park, which adopts a progressive environmental philosophy, Hien has devoted itself to developing products that are safe for people and the environment. Hien’s history reflects the foresight that has guided the company since its founding.

Thanks to help from all who have been a part of its business since the beginning, Hien celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding. The time has finally come to put into practice the experience, technologies, and expertise gained over the years. Making “manufacturing one-of-a-kind products” its business motto, Hien has continued to forge ahead and will continue to do so in the future.
